Packaging in Wine & Spirits: Where Strategy Meets Detail

Packaging is one of the largest cost buckets and biggest risk areas in Wine & Spirits supply chains — and it deserves far more strategic attention than most companies give it.

Ask any Wine & Spirits operator what keeps them up at night, and packaging will usually make the list.

And for good reason. Packaging in this category is complex, expensive, brand-critical, and supply-chain-fragile all at the same time. The bottle you choose, the closure you specify, the label you design — these aren't just aesthetic decisions. They're supply chain decisions with major cost and risk implications.

Here's how I think about packaging strategy with clients.

Glass Is Your Biggest Lever — and Your Biggest Risk

Glass typically represents the single largest packaging cost in wine and spirits. It's also one of the longest lead-time, hardest-to-substitute components in your supply chain. Getting your glass strategy right — the right suppliers, the right buffer, the right specification — is essential.

Closure Strategy Is More Complex Than It Looks

Natural cork, synthetic cork, screw cap, Diam — each closure choice has different cost, performance, and brand positioning implications. There's also a supply dimension: natural cork in particular has faced availability challenges that have caught some producers off guard.

Label Compliance Is a Risk Area

Label compliance requirements in the U.S. market — and especially in export markets — are detailed and unforgiving. A compliance issue can hold up a product release or require a costly label reprint. Building compliance review into your packaging development process from the start is far cheaper than fixing it at the end.

Benchmark Your Packaging Vendors Regularly

Packaging vendor relationships in Wine & Spirits can become very comfortable — sometimes too comfortable. The market for glass, labels, closures, and secondary packaging is competitive. Regularly benchmarking your vendors keeps pricing honest and your supply chain options open.

Packaging strategy in Wine & Spirits is a discipline in itself. If you're looking to reduce costs, reduce risk, or both, I'd be glad to help you take a fresh look at your packaging supply chain.
